Fantastic set, Crina. Been there twice and I'd like to return again....

Crina Prida's avatar

thank you, Paul! I agree - it's a place that can become addictive - people, colors, light.

It took me some time to get to read this, as it took you to write this post. I'm sorry to read about your disappointment with exchanges (if you can call then that) on this platform and elsewhere. I can only say I can understand your feelings about it, but that doesn't help of course. I hope you don't let it spoil whatever positive experience you get from your interactions with real people that don't use AI to do the talking for them.

That said, it's so good to see your photos from your trip to Marrakech and read about it. The aromas of this city I know only from some Moroccan spices I use in my kitchen, but how mesmerizing its chromatics are, your photos reveal to a degree that surprised me, even having seen quite a bit of your photography before.

The stone red of the surroundings of the boys playing soccer is a powerful visual opening of your post, followed by another, more peaceful scene in what looks like late afternoon sun, with a young man (and a cat, of course) at ease against the front of an traditional building, heavy with electric wiring. Your market photos you made with your Fuji, aren't just colorful; it's the quality/character of the light that fascinates me about these photos, and convince me of the beauty being forced on you, as you wrote.

The huge difference between abundance of choices and supplies of the market and the harsh reality of poverty, existing in the same city, is so well illustrated by your beautiful photo of a mother with her children, sitting in the street with a carton of milk, photographed without any drama, which would seem tempting to add for some surely.

The 'oasis' of the luxury restaurant you visited, being in the midst of a busy and noisy city, seems to exist by presenting the guests with the paraphernalia of a rich and worry-free existence that makes them forget where they are, if only temporarily. But a short span of time doesn't seem to have been enough for the lady sitting alone with her glass of wine, her expression one of ultimate disillusionment with human existence, for which there is no remedy.

I take your word for the things you say about the difference you experienced between photographing in color and B&W in this city, and looking at your monochromes, I'd say you intentionally chose color or B&W to match your subjects and light situations, which you're used to, as many other photographers who are aware of the fact the world is too complex to be recorded in one or the other solely. I admire photographers who can express themselves fully in their chosen reproduction of the world, but there are not too many who fully convince me in that respect. Your B&Ws I find as impressive as your color images, but maybe more penetrating, but I have to think about that more to explore that further. I know how I feel about that choice in my own photography, but I see it's a bit different in yours. The first B&W, with the high wall on the right and the gorgeous shadows on the wall in the center, will keep lingering in my mind and it's my favorite one out of all these.

Sorry for my very long reaction, Crina, but I simply can't just say 'wonderful', presented with a substantial piece like this. Thank you for sharing this, I'm looking forward to your announced second Marrakech post already, but do take your time, so that we all can be genuinely amazed again!

I have to say with not a gram of false modesty, that your comment made my day (especially since it was a long dentist day to begin with). You read my photos pretty much as I had intended them. It’s very easy to get distracted in the middle of a tornado of visual information. And yes, when I came home and looked at the photos, I relived the emotions almost at the same note as when I snapped. I’ll try to come back with some photos of Essaouira and other particular spots I’ve seen, but you are right, I need to put a bit of distance between than and now, before making a decent selection.

And I forgot to mention that photo of the cat sitting between what I guess are souvenirs. I loved that one. It's an image that gets better the more you study it. I noticed the strange French('Deffonce d'uriner' and 'te taime') on some of the signs, a Mustang logo like the one I posted recently and the shadow of that shopkeeper cat's head on its fur, almost too much for one photo.

Vincent Wagenaar's avatar

I’m happy to hear writing a comment can make a difference! Your photos are so full of life, they made me feel like I’d been there myself. That doesn’t happen too often.

Crina Prida's avatar

thanks again - and for noticing the colorful but grammar/spelling-challenged signs. I bought one with a cat and one with a dentist - the latter is beyond creepy :)

Vincent Wagenaar's avatar

I hope you don’t put that creepy dentist sign up in your waiting room. Many dentists are creepy! Not you of course :) I used to have a (rather sadistic) dentist who said things like “stop making a fuss, this doesn’t hurt at all” when performing a root canal treatment.

I want to come back and read the whole post, Crina but I couldn't help but look at the photos... simply stunning!!

Crina Prida's avatar

thank you dear! I am so happy you liked them. I want to make a follow-up about some particular places I have seen. Hopefully soon-ish.

Such a cool idea to negotiate the spaces of the city with different cameras, although both sets of pictures convey an intimate and somewhat secluded atmosphere. Apart from the donkey and cart, you seem to use the wide angle lens to capture things at fairly close quarters. An interesting experience of space.

Marca Crina...

I have been a few times and the light and colors were amazing. Along with Moorish architecture, the red Medina and souqs, magical. You captured it well!

Crina Prida's avatar

Thank you, Paul. I might decide to return and use the information I've acquired to explore better.

So many beautiful photographs in this group, Crina. I love the pairings of intense color and burnished brown/gold metal and wood. Plus the black-and-whites. Makes me so eager to see the results of our collaborative rolls!

Crina Prida's avatar

thank you George! I am starting BOTH rolls this week - I was busy with this trip, so I had to put it on hold, especially because your envelope arrived so late (thankfully it did arrive). Anyway, I will message you the updates.

George Slade's avatar

Yay! I look forward to news. Thanks again for the pictures from Marrakech, so beautiful. Especially the one of the woman with the wine glass and the glowing sunlight in the deep space.

Crina Prida's avatar

oh, gosh, I loved the scene - she was traveling with another lady friend, they were so cool and oblivious - I hope to grow old like that!

George Slade's avatar

I was going to say, she looked exquisite and so comfortable in her skin. I hope we can all be that way now and in the future. I thought for a minute that you and she were sitting together, that she was a friend of yours, maybe a relative. There's such closeness in the photo.

Fantastica fotografia oglinzilor!
